Ok – I started trying to get a specific color of stain however this project did not work out the way I expected. That being said I did complete this case. The outcome was not where I was headed and I didn’t feel like stripping the entire case down to change it – nothing ventured – nothing gained…
This case is not one of my favorites and I experimented with stain mixes, adding labels by using Mod Podge to glue on a label and trying other image transfer methods. The outcome was ok but not my favorite… Enjoy…

This has been a real adventure. I purchased this case at Total Wine and it has these very stylish black painted sides with the gold lettering. I hand rubbed this finish and learned some new tricks applying the gel stain. I was able to get a high finish by sanding between stain coats and adjusting the amount of time and changing the amount of stain during the application. I have a spray system for the lacquer but my gun is giving me issues so I used rattle cans and Mohawk satin finish. 1 can completed the entire case, Hobby Lobby has the hardware and it’s fun to see what they have on sale.

This was a quick try and using Old Masters stain – which has an interesting color to it. I got this stain from a cabinet shop that was no longer using it and it was a free stain. So on that note it was just going to be an experiment on how it works. Here are the results…

Did you know Total Wine sells wine crates? Its been an interesting adventure. This is my first attempt and it was just to explore stain application and dial in my clear coat spray gun. For sanding I am using a Festool 574993 ETS 125 sander I bought on sale. Best investment I have made yet. I also completed my kitchen cabinets using this great sander.
